"As an expectant father, I wanted to leave nothing

regarding my wife's birth experience to chance.  We

attended pre-natal education classes, covering

everything from breastfeeding to swaddling to

nutrition.  My wife and I wanted to be as educated as

possible about everything we might expect as

first-time parents.

While talking to other dads that I know, one of them

told us about how much a doula helped them through the

birth of his son.  We decided to investigate this

option as well, and see how we felt about having

someone assist us with the birth.

After interviewing several doula candidates, and

hearing how their approaches differed, we finally

decided to have Karma assist us with the birth.  We

felt really comfortable with her from the very

beginning, as she told us how she would assist us with

the pre-birth planning, and what role she would play

during the birth.  I never felt like she was trying to

take anyone's place during the process.  Rather, she

planned on playing a supporting role.  I can't say how

valuable her assistance was.

My wife ended up having to be induced.  Her labor was an 

official 34 hours end-to-end, part of that a very difficult 

contraction period as she tried to do as much of the 

labor as she could without medication.  Although I had 

gone through the labor classes, I found it difficult to 

remember everything that I had to do to support my wife 

during this process.  The emotional experience of it all was

a bit overwhelming.  That is where Karma proved to be

invaluable.

Karma worked with us through all phases of the labor

process, especially helping us to deal with pain

management through breathing techniques and position

changes.  She helped my wife to find ways to manage

the pain, and constantly supported both of us through

the experience.  Her constant reinforcement was

comforting and relieving, and also helped both of us

to get some rest at times.

In the end, we had a beautiful baby girl, and everyone

came out of the experience completely healthy, but

very tired.  I can honestly say that without Karma's

assistance, the experience would have been more

difficult.  But rather than worry about all the stuff

I had to remember with the classes, I was able to

support my wife emotionally.  I would recommend a 

doula to all first time parents.  It was a very worthwhile

investment on our part.

We will always be grateful for all of Karma's support,

and she will be a permanent part of a special memory

that will last a lifetime."
